2004 Greek
Cup Champions!
|
Four straight wins 10-0, 9-4, 17-8, and the final 23-3
crowned Spartakos as the Champions of the 2004 Greek Cup!
Probably the hardest competition in Greek Baseball as
this knockout tournament sends the losers home. As in
the Lord Of The Rings, 16 teams total, 1 team to rule
them all... this year, as in 2001 and 2002, that team
was Spartakos Glyfadas.
3 Competitions, 3 Victories, and 3 great new players
joined the team. Billy
Petkidis, Harry
Assimakopoulos, and of course, Alex
Alvarez, who happens to be this website's developer,
news editor, and photographer as well. Spartakos was also
gifted this year by JetOil's support as our proud sponsors.
In conclusion, 2004 was an ideal year for our team. Let's
call it the year 333!

2004
Acis Aris Cup - 1st Place!
|
On behalf of Spartakos Glyfadas, our team President,
Mr. Andreas Arvanitis, as well as our players and coach,
would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our friends
in Thessaloniki, for having organized such a friendly
tournament. The atmosphere was great, the teams were well
behaved, and the new field was much better than everyone
had expected.
It's incredible how a handful of baseball loving people
can do for the sport. The field was built by volunteers
on an unsuitable area and yet, the ground is taking good
shape, the measurements are accurate and soon they'll
be installing a sprinkler system for the grass to grow
in the outfield. They took the initiative to build stands,
improvise with live comentary on a battery powered speaker
system, and even brought in a food cart for hot dogs and
refreshments. By next year, this field will certainly
be the pride of Thessaloniki's baseball fans.

During this cup, the undisputed MVP Award went to
Chris
Mosios who hit 2 out of the park homeruns.
Panos
Heilakis also had his moment when he hit an inside of the park
home run at the final game.
Nick
Iosif and
Chris Robinson
were our star pitchers.
The Umpires were composed of volunteer players of the teams Acis
Aris and Athletes in Action who together made a terrific job.
They were friendly, the calls were good and consistent, the strike
zones undisputed, and the overall imparciality was magnificent.
A special thanks goes to the volunteer Umpire staff for their
outstanding job.

2004 National Champions!
|
Three straight wins 10-0, 5-0, and the final 7-6 crowned
Spartakos as 2004 Greek Tournament Champions after Ainos
Kefalonias started off leading with the first win in the
finals by 2 runs.
The all Greek based team celebrates a well deserved
championship victory after having DEFEATED EVERY TEAM
by 10 RUNS OR MORE with whoever international players
they flew in from abroad to help them survive against
us. In the finals, Nick
Iosif and Chris
Robinson brilliantly pitched for Spartakos allowing
the rest of the team to concentrate on hitting.
This season has been the best yet for all teams as the
national level of play has vastly improved from previous
seasons. We're happy about the promising future of Greek
Baseball. Kudos to Coach
Tom Mazarakis for his first Championship win after
the team had three 2nd places, and 2 Greek Cups.

7th Place in the B' Pool European Cup Winners Cup Championship
of 2003 that was held in Brno, of The Czech Republic.
2nd Place in the Greek Championship in 2003
After a great regular season in which we easily defeated Marousi
12 - 2, the Greek Baseball Federation decided to change the rules
for the championship and to have a best of 5 series. After we
both defeated our opponents in our semifinal matches, we lost
to Marousi 2004 in the series by 3 games to 1. Our defeat can
be attributed to injuries and fatigue which plagued our team.
2002 Greek Cup Champions!
In a game marked by rain delays and a muddy field, Spartakos
easily defeated Marousi 2004 in the Cup Championship final by
a lopsided score of 13-3. The game was ended after 7 full innings
due to the 10 run mercy rule which was put into effect. Chris
Robinson was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts. Homeruns
were hit by Chris Robinson, Kyriakos Kourtzoglou, and Lou Kogionis.

2001 Greek Cup Champions!
|
After losing the first Greek Baseball Championship to
Marousi 2004 at the final game in May of 2000, Spartakos,
under the new General Manager Tom Mazarakis, avenged their
previous defeat by defeating their arch rival in a semifinal
5 inning match for the cup by a whooping score of 13-6.
Kyriakos Kourtzoglou was the winning pitcher throwing
13 strikeouts out of a total 15 PO's.
In the final, Spartakos easily defeated the team Pelopas
of Patra to win the first Greek Cup Championship. George
Tsakalis was the winning pitcher for Spartakos, while
Panos Cheilakis was awarded the first ever MVP award
by the Greek Amateur Baseball Federation.
